We celebrated Coicís/Seachtain na Gaeilge a little bit later this year but that didn’t stop us from having a great time promoting the Irish Language through various fun activities! We usually celebrate Seachtain (week) na Gaeilge but this year we decided to expand it to two weeks, hence using the name Coicís na Gaeilge. Below is a sample of some of the activities that took place over the two weeks.
Raidió na Gaeltachta – every class performed a piece through Irish over the school’s intercom system.
Siopa Geni – The kids were busy earning coins for speaking as much Irish as they could. Twice a week, Geni would visit each class with a variety of different prizes that the kids could purchase with their coins.
Gaeltacht Béal Mhaighne – The whole school was turned into a Gaeltacht (an area where Irish is spoken). Pupils and staff interacted through Irish and some may have earned coins for Siopa Geni.
Seesaw activities through Irish that were suitable for all ages and abilities.
Seanfhocal (proverb) Poster Competition – Pupils in the senior end of the school were encouraged to pick their favourite Irish proverb and create a poster.
Gael Factor – Every class learned and performed a song in Irish. The recording of the Gael Factor can be viewed below. Each class performance took place in the school hall.
Lá Glas – all the kids and staff were encouraged to wear green for their class’ Gael Factor performance.
Gaeilge songs during the Happiness Disco on the last day of term.
Uachtar Reoite (Ice Cream) – the kids were encouraged to order through Irish. Lessons were provided by the class teachers to help with this.
Kahoot Quizzes in Irish – all classes took part in an Irish Kahoot Quiz in the hall.
GAA Blitz for the pupils in 2nd and 3rd class.
Karen’s class assembly – the senior infants in Karen’s class performed their assembly in Irish.
